Roy "Big Country" Nelson crowned as TUF 10 champion

Saturday Night we witnessed the culmination of The Ultimate Fighter 10, with the exciting finale bout between Roy Nelson and Brendan Schaub.

As many had predicted, the experienced former IFL champ, Roy Nelson came out victorious in the end. I honestly did not expect Nelson to win by KO though, as Schaubs standup is very good and Nelson definitely having the edge on the mat.

I had imagined him taking Schaub down and finishing him with ground and pound, but the KO victory was a refreshing finish from the big bellied Nelson, and I look forward to seeing more of him in the future. I wonder who they have in mind for him next? As much as I like Roy Nelson, I have a hard time picturing him being any kind of threat to heavyweights like Lesnar, Big Nog, Carwin, Mir and Velasquez. Now that he is officially signed with the UFC, I guess time will tell.

Kimbo Slice also got his much anticipated octagon debut, with a unanimous decision over Houston Alexander.

The fight did not go down as expected at all, with Alexander constantly circling away from Slice, clearly frustrating the Florida brawler. Alexander was somewhat succefull in punishing Kimbos front leg with some quick inside leg kicks, but it was not enough to stop the bearded streetfighter who definitely got the better of most exchanges whenever there was actually some contact. Honestly I think several minutes passed before the two fighters actually had any form of contact, and I was surprised Alexander didn't get a warning. It must have been the leg kicks that kept him active enuogh to avoid the warning.

In the second round Kimbo dominated Houston, and really showed off some of those new found ground skills. The guys at American Top Team are clearly doing a great job with Kimbo and he is learning fast. All in all it was a solid performance by Kimbo Slice, and although I don't think he can reach the absolute pinnacle of this sport, I foresee some interesting matchups in the future.

Another controversial fight was the bout between undefeated Jon Jones and Matt Hamill. After Jones scored a takedown and moved to the mount position, he unleashed some terrifying ground and pound. Punches and elbows were raining down on Hamill, who could do nothing but cover up. At this point the fight got stopped due to Jones using an illegal strike, the straight up and down elbow. It is not allowed under the current rules and since Hamill could not continue due to a severe cut caused by the illegal blow, Jones was disqualified and Hamill got the win.

The interesting thing about this incident, was the very calm and collected reaction from Jon Jones. He appeared very mature for a 22 year old and said that the pressure is now off him, because he is no longer undefeated, and that he will come back even stronger. Good for him, and I really think he has what it takes to go far in this sport.

Other fights from the event:

Frankie Edgar def. Matt Veach by 2nd round submission
Matt Mitrione def. Marcus Jones by 2nd round KO
James McSweeney def. Darrill Schoonover by 3rd round TKO
Jon Madsen def. Justin Wren by split decision
Brian Stann def. Rodney Wallace by unanimous decision
John Howard def. Dennis Hallman by 3rd round KO
Mark Bocek def. Joe Brammer by 1st round submission

End draws near for The Ultimate Fighter Season 10

SPOILER ALERT: If you haven't watched The Ultimate Fighter S10E11 yet, and don't want to be spoiled, I guess you should stop reading :)

Matt Mitrione once again showed his true colors when he claimed his "rattled brain" was just a tactic to throw James McSweeney off his game. First of all, it was a lie. Matt Mitrione clearly got hurt in his fight against Scott Junk. Maybe not physically, but definitely mentally. Everyone could tell he just didn't want to fight McSweeney and all the theatrics from Mitrione really only served to make himself look bad. Second, if his statement was true, it was a very disrespectful thing to do to a fellow fighter.

When Mitrione finally came to his senses and decided to fight, it was McSweeneys turn to make Mitrione look bad. McSweeney came out and totally picked Mitrione apart, he got the better of Mitrione standing up, with takedowns and in the end with a guillotine submission to win the fight. Game over for Matt Mitrione and to be honest, he had it coming. He should show a bit more respect towards the sport and his fellow fighters.

In the second fight of the episode, we saw Marcus Jones battle it out with Darril Schoonover. Well, it was more of a steamrolling than a battle, as Jones dominated Schoonover from start to finish.

Jones looked really impressive in his first fight of the season, and followed it up by another stellar performance. After almost taking Schoonovers leg off with a devastating leg kick, Jones took Scoonover to the ground with a powerful takedown. Marcus Jones displayed some excellent ground skills in controlling Schoonover and really punishing him from both side control and from inside the guard. The fight ended with Jones putting Schoonover to sleep with some vicious ground and pound from guard. Marcus Jones was literally in full control of Schoonover the entire fight and is my pick to win the entire season (although Brendan Schaub is looking really good too).

The episode also featured a little back and forth exchange of words between Rampage and Rashad, which is always funny, since we know how rampage backed out of the planned fight to go star in a movie (yeah go figure). In the end Dana White announced the semifinals, and we have 2 great bouts to look forward to:

Roy Nelson vs James McSweeney

Marcus Jones vs Brendan Schaub

I'm really looking forward to these two fights and of course the finale. It has been a slightly disappointing season, but it is really starting to pick up and the recent fights have been great.

The Last Emperor - A HDNet documentary about Fedor Emelianenko

On friday night, HDNet aired an awesome documentary about Fedor "The Last Emperor" Emelianenko, who just so happens to be my all time favorite fighter. Although the guy hasn't lost a fight in 9 years, he is just recently getting the recognition he deserves in the US. He has been absolutely huge in the rest of the world and especially in Japan, where he reigned as the Pride Heavyweight Champion for a very long time. He is currently the WAMMA heavyweight champion, and in his most recent bout he won a devastating TKO victory over Brett Rogers.

I enjoyed the documentary so I decided to share it with fellow MMA fans. Enjoy the 3 part documentary in HD below:

Fighter Profile: Gegard "The Dreamcatcher" Mousasi

Gegard Mousasi is one of the fastest rising superstars of MMA, and one of my favourite MMA fighters. He is very well rounded and is very humble and respectful by nature. Many, including myself, find similarities between Mousasi and Fedor Emelianenko, both in fighting style and their humble behavior outside the ring/cage.

Name: Gegard Mousasi
Nickname: The Dreamcatcher
Record: 27-2-1
Association: Red Devil International
Height: 6'1" (186cm)
Weight: 205lbs (93kg)
Date of birth: 1985-08-01

The Early Years

Gegard Mousasi was born to Armenian parents in Iran during the Iran-Iraq War. At the age of 4, Mousasi and his family relocated to Leiden, Netherlands, where he finished grade school before developing an interest in martial arts. He started practicing Judo and later boxing at age 15; twelve months later he became the amateur boxing champion of the Netherlands. He then switched to kickboxing and then eventually to mixed martial arts.

Rising Star

In the first round of the Dream's 2008 Middleweight Grand Prix at Dream 2 he defeated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Denis Kang by triangle choke. In the second round of the tournament, at Dream 4, he won a decision victory over Dong Sik Yoon and advanced to the final round which took place at Dream 6. There he fought and submitted K-1 veteran Melvin Manhoef in the semi-finals before meeting up with submission specialist Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza in the final. Mousasi defeated Souza by an upkick after being taken down by the Brazilian, thus becoming the first Dream Middleweight Champion and 2008 Middleweight Grand Prix tournament winner. Watch that fight here:

In somewhat of a surprise to the MMA world, Gegard agreed to take on Japanese K-1 fighter Musashi in a K-1 rules fight at Dynamite!! 2008. Being an open weight fight Gegard weighed in at 97.8 kg/216 lbs, all but confirming his desire to move up in weight classes. Gegard stated after winning the Dream Middleweight Grand Prix he would no longer fight at middleweight due to the large weight cut. Gegard was not favored to win the match against the more experienced Musashi, but came out fast and scored a first round KO. Gegard went undefeated in 2008 going 6-0 in MMA, and 1-0 in K-1.

Light Heavyweight

In interviews from early 2009, Mousasi stated the weight he put on after winning Dream's middleweight tournament was too much for him to cut back down to middleweight and that his next fights would be at light-heavyweight and eventually heavyweight instead.

Watch Mousasi submit Mark Hunt in the first round of the Super Hulk Grand Prix at Dream 9:

Mousasi was set to fight Renato "Babalu" Sobral at Affliction: Trilogy on August 1, 2009, but the event was canceled after losing its main event 10 days prior to the event. It was originally planned for him to face Vitor Belfort at that event, but there was a disagreement between both fighters over which weight class the fight would be fought at. On Monday July 27, 2009 it was announced that the cancelled bout between Sobral and Mousasi would take place on the August 15 Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg card and the fight became a contest for the Strikeforce Light Heavyweight championship belt. Mousasi defeated Sobral via KO in the first round to become the Strikeforce Light Heavyweight champion. Watch that fight here:

At M-1 Breakthrough a exhibition grappling match between new Strikeforce Light Heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi and Fedor Emelianenko took place in which both showed great grappling throws and sweeps but ended by Fedor submitting Mousasi by arm bar with one and a half minutes left in the first round. Watch the exhibition fight here:

Mousasis latest fight was his TKO victory over Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, 3 minutes and 43 seconds into the 2nd round on November 7, 2009 at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers. Watch that fight here:

MMA fighters go straight to DVD

In the recent years we have seen more and more MMA fighters cross over into the movies. I guess being played by a real life MMA fighter, could add a lot of credibility to any bad ass in a movie. On the other hand, they usually have no real training or experience in acting, so the non-action scenes usually come out rather bland.

"Never Surrender" is a MMA movie from Lionsgate Films that was released straight to DVD and starred a whole list of top tier fighters. George St.Pierre, BJ Penn, Rampage Jackson, Heath Herring and Anderson Silva all have roles in this debacle of a movie. If you are expecting a quality credible MMA movie, you might want to give this one a miss. But if your looking for some cheesy acting, tits and WWE style choreographed fights, then this is for you. Watch the trailer for the movie below:

Andrei Arlovski also has a new movie coming out, called Universal Soldier: Regeneration. Starring in this third installment of the Universal Soldier franchise is Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren. I honestly didn't think these guys made movies anymore and as you can probably guess, it's going straight to DVD. Watch the trailer for the movie below:

As more and more fighters cross over into the movie industry, I'm sure they will grace us with many more embarrassing moments. There is however one very positive side to this: MMA gets exposure to the general public. MMA is growing at an incredible pace all over the world and I guess this Hollywood exposure can't hurt.

Sometimes it does have a direct negative effect for MMA fans though. For example, take the Rashad Evans vs Rampage Jackson fight. This time the fans really got screwed out of a potentially great fight, by Rampage pulling out to go play Mr-T in the new A-Team movie. I'm sure I speak for most MMA fans when I express my dissappointment. I'd much rather see Rampage battle it out in the cage with Evans, than see him running around on the big screen with a mohawk.

Kimbo Slice fighting in TUF Finale

Kimbo Slice, also known as Kevin Ferguson, will enter the Octagon on December 5 for The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale, according to Spike TV.

Kimbo, who was defeated early in the series by Roy "Big Country" Nelson, will fight an opponent announced at a later date. The cable network says it all depends on what transpires on the special two-hour TUF episode a few days before, but everyone expects the opponent to be Houston Alexander.

Alexander was approved for re-licensure on November 3 by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and the rumors of a Kimbo Slice vs Houston Alexander bout, have been out there for a while now. The bout is rumored to be contested at a 215 catch-weight, since Alexander usually fights at LHW. Kimbo, with an official record of 3-1, is currently training at American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida for the fight.

Kimbo has some really powerful hands and a great work ethic, but coming into the MMA game at 35 years with close to zero ground skills, might prove too big of a challenge for the street fighter from Florida. I suspect Kimbo to get a lot of fights in the future, but they will most likely be against over the hill opponents who like to stand up and trade strikes. He might become the new Tank Abbott so to speak. The UFC is too much of a business to put on fights that will go down like the Kimbo vs Nelson bout did. It was straight-up embarrassing.

UFC 106: A bloodied Griffin takes the decision over Ortiz

Saturday night the UFC put on one of their weakest cards in a long time, but the main event was definitely no disappointment at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

It has been over three years since Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffin met in the octagon. The much discussed bout at UFC 59 ended with Tito getting a marginal split decision over Forrest, and fans have been wanting a rematch ever since.

The rematch was worth the wait for Forrest, as he got a hard fought split decision victory over Tito. It was an all out war in the octagon, and it looked like Forrest was in trouble a few times, as Tito applied his world grade ground and pound. Vicious elbows rained down as Forrest tried to neutralize and sweep his opponent. Forrest managed to get up everytime Tito took him down, and as the fight progressed, Titos conditioning became a major factor. In the stand up department, Forrest was superior and picked apart a visibly gassed Tito.

After the fight Tito proclaimed that he came into the fight with a bulging disc and a cracked skull. If this is true, I commend Tito for his heart, but couldn't he have waited a little before making such excuses? Especially since he has been talking up how healthy his body is now and that we were going to see a different Tito. I guess there might be some truth to his statements, as Tito entered the octagon with a massive black eye. In the end it was clearly his conditioning that failed him.

Josh Koscheck and Anthony Johnson met in a fight that was riddled with fouls and controversy. First Johnson struck Koscheck with a knee to the head while he was on the ground (replays show that the knee was in fact blocked), then Koscheck answered back by poking Johnson in the eye twice. Koscheck ended up securing a rear naked choke for the victory 4:47 into the second round.

"Lil Nog" or Antonio Rogerio Nogueira had his UFC debut on Saturday, and got a very impressive TKO victory over Luiz Arthur Cane. Nogueiras striking was very crisp and Cane never really did any damage. The TKO stoppage came at 1:56 into the first round.

Also on the card we saw Amir Sadollah steamroll the "New York Bad Ass" Phil Baroni. After surviving Baronis opening onslaught, Sadollah picked his opponent apart with excellent striking. Sadollah obviously had the conditioning edge over Baroni, and the unanimous decision would have been a TKO had the fight gone on for much longer.

Paulo Thiago also won a unanimous decision over Jacob Volkmann, who tasted his first defeat ever and came off a 9 fight winning streak.

UFC 107 is shaping up very nicely and I will do a post about that upcoming event soon.

Strikeforce Challengers Series 5: Rising Talent

It's good to be a fan of MMA these days. The sport is growing at an amazing pace and there are emerging talents across all divisions. Friday night was an opportunity to see some of this talent, at the Strikeforce Challengers Series 5 at Memorial Hall in Kansas City.

The main event featured a very impressive Tyron Woodley against Rudy Bears. Woodley is an extremely athletic fighter and it didn't take long to realize that Bears was in trouble. After getting a takedown he started to work for the arm-triangle choke. As soon as Woodley passed the guard and secured side control, the submission was on tight and Bears was forced to tap 2:52 into the first round.

Woodley is now unbeaten in six fights and five of them have been first round submissions. That is quite impressive and I look forward to seeing more of T-Wood, as he is called, in the future.

I really respect Strikeforce for promoting womens MMA and we have seen some great matches lately. On this card we saw Kerry Vera in a dominating performance against Kim Couture. Vera was successfull in neutralizing Coutures takedowns and displayed some very sharp striking. After freeing herself from a clinch, she unleashed a flurry of strikes that really punished Couture. Unable to defend against the damage, the referee wisely stopped the bout at 3:35 in the first round for a Vera TKO victory.

In other fights we saw Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante defeat Aaron Rosa with a TKO 3:25 into round two.

Fight of the Night was without a doubt Bobby Voelker against Erik Apple. Voelker survived an early onslaught and gradually gained control of the fight for a very impressive TKO victory.

UFC 106: Griffin to face a confident Ortiz

Saturday November 21, Tito Ortiz returns to the octagon after an 18 month layoff to face Forrest Griffin, currently ranked no. 5 in the LHW division. Ortiz was originally scheduled to fight Mark Coleman, who had to pull out due to a MCL tear in training. Forrest only had 6 weeks to prepare for this fight and had to cut his honeymoon short to get back in training.

I am really looking forward to see what the new and injury free Ortiz can do in the LHW division. Griffin is a really tough guy and I think Tito has to bring his best to have any chance. There has been a lot of speculation about Griffins mental strength after he suffered a somewhat humiliating defeat at the hands of Anderson Silva. Personally I don't think there is anything wrong with Griffin mentally, Silva was just better at the striking game and it made Griffin look bad. I think Titos style and skillset in the Octagon will be a much better match for Forrest, and I expect to see a war.

The two fighters share an almost identical record coming into this fight, and since we don't really know what Tito is bringing anymore, it is hard to make a solid prediction. If I had to though, I predict a unanimous decision to Forrest Griffin.

All fights on the UFC 106 card:

Main Event
Forrest Griffin (205) VS Tito Ortiz (204)

Anthony Johnson (170) VS Josh Koscheck (171)
Paulo Thiago (169) VS Jacob Volkmann (170)
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (205) VS Luiz "Banha" Cane (205)
Phil Baroni (170) VS Amir Sadollah (170)

Ben Saunders (170) VS Marcus Davis (170)
Jake Rosholt (185.5) VS Kendall Grove (186)

Brian Foster (171) VS Brock Larson (171)
Fabricio Camoes (155.5) VS Caol Uno (155.5)
Jason Dent (155) VS George Sotiropoulos (155)

WEC 44: Aldo dominates Brown to take the belt

Jose Aldo hasn't lost a fight in four years, and was never in any danger from Mike Thomas Brown in the main event at WEC 44 at The Palms Casino Resort, Las Vegas.

The brazilian came out a bit slower than usual, but once he found his range and stepped up the pace, Brown was obviously in trouble. Aldo neutralized all of Browns takedown attempts, while landing powerful punches, kicks and knees throughout the first round. Aldo showed no sign of letting off the pressure in the second round and after getting a takedown of his own, he secured Browns back, got his hooks in, flattened him out and started some vicious punishment. As Brown was unable to get out of the bad position and the relentless attacks from Aldo seemed to make Brown more and more limp, referee Steve Mazzagatti had no choice but to stop the bout at 1:20 in the second round for a TKO victory for the new WEC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo.

After this impressive performance, it is only fair to include Jose Aldo in any discussion about who the best pound for pound fighter is. His 16-1 record is very impressive and I don't see anyone taking the featherweight title away from Aldo anytime soon.

For the record, I was spot on with my prediction from my previous post. Second round TKO victory to Jose Aldo.

On the same night, Manny Gamburyan secured a unanimous decision over the always entertaining Leonard Garcia. It was 3 rounds of Garcia throwing huge punches that never landed, and Gamburyan constantly trying to get the fight to the ground. Gamburyan scored many takedowns throughout the fight to get the win, but failed to really do a lot of damage.

Armenian Karen Darabedyan won a split decision over former champion Rob McCullough. Darabedyan was very impressive and got the better of McCullough in most of the exchanges, especially with his punches. McCullough on the other hand, punished Darabedyan with very nice kicks to the legs and midsection. Although McCullough did rally at the end and seemed to take over the fight, it was not enough as the judges gave Darabedyan the win.

We also saw Shane Roller secure a submission victory over Danny Castillo at 3:32 in the third round via rear naked choke.

WEC is always a good MMA show and this time was no different. Exciting, fast paced fights in the lighter divisions, coupled with a lot of awesome talent makes WEC one of my favorite events.

WEC 44: Brown vs Aldo Tonight!

It is November 18 and another explosive WEC event is about to go down. Featherweight champion Mike Thomas Brown is set to take on top contender Jose Aldo in what many say could be the fight of the year. Aldo brings a very technical but vicious striking game, while Brown is a very strong and well rounded fighter with good wrestling and submissions. Although Aldo is more known for his striking, he is a bjj black belt and is definitely no pushover on the ground.

My prediction would have to be a high intensity close fight, with the title going to Aldo by way of second round KO or TKO.

The complete card for WEC 44 can be found below:

Main Event – WEC Featherweight Title
Mike Brown (145) vs Jose Aldo (145)

Manny Gamburyan (146) vs Leonard Garcia (146)
Rob McCullough (155) vs Karen Darabedyan (156)
Danny Castillo (156) vs Shane Roller (156)

Kamal Shalorus (156) vs Will Kerr (155)
Diego Nunes (146) vs LC Davis (146)
Cub Swanson (146) vs John Franchi (145)
Antonio Banuelos (136) vs Kenji Osawa (136)
Ricardo Lamas (155) vs James Krause (156)
Seth Dikun (136) vs Frank Gomez (136)

Rogers Loses His Head

I saw this animated gif and just had to post it here. It is very well made and is a tribute to Fedor Emelianenkos powerful hands.

Fedor Emelianenko TKOs a game Brett Rogers

The Nov. 7 Strikeforce bout between heavyweights Fedor Emelianenko and Brett Rogers was watched by millions across the globe, and I am sure the event left no MMA fan disappointed.

Rogers surprised many by taking Fedor into the second round, and he also opened a nasty cut on the bridge of Fedors nose in the beginnning of round 1. Fedor still won the first round and after getting his cut looked at by his corner, he came out and finished Rogers with a crushing right hand followed by some quick ground and pound.

Before the fight, Rogers stated he would not let the huge name of Fedor get to his head, and that he would treat him like any other opponent. He said was going to hurt Fedor. After the fight Rogers had to admit he gave the Ukraine born russian too much respect and was hesitant to let his hands go. Then he continued to claim that if there was a rematch, the end result would be very different. I must say he came across as a sore loser while struggling to come to grips with his first defeat. Personally I was impressed with Rogers performance, but his post fight comments were uncalled for, and I am sure he would have gained a lot more respect in the MMA world if he showed a little humility. After all, there is no shame in losing to Fedor, especially after taking him to the second round and showing the world he did actually deserve to be in that cage.

Next in line for "The Last Emperor" might be Fabricio Werdum. Werdum won a hard fought decision against fellow Brazilian Antonio Silva, who came off a 6 win streak. Many fans, including myself, are anticipating a future bout between Fedor and Alistair Overeem. Overeem is the current Strikeforce HW champion, and Fedor wants that belt. Will Overeem come back to the US to defend his title anytime soon? I think it's about time, as one should not be able to remain the champ for years without defending the belt.

Rising superstar Gegard Mousasi, also showcased his talent in a TKO victory over Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou on this actionpacked card. Mousasi is such a great talent, I feel it is only right to do a feature article about him soon. So watch out for that one.

Overall the Strikeforce event was a great night of MMA action. Strikeforce/M-1 Global/CBS should be very happy, and MMA fans around the world sure got their moneys worth.
